Lawrence Smith (1656-1728) is responding to William Coward's work Second Thoughts concerning Human Soul which was first published in 1702, under the pseudonym of Estibius Psychalethes; Coward argued that the notions of an immortal and immaterial soul were pagan doctrines, illegitimately grafted onto true Christianity; the work met with a great deal of controversy and his books were publicly burned.
