Leonard Euler (1707-1783), eminent mathematician, important to German philosophy for his defence of Newtonian against Leibnizian theories, and especially for his defence of Newton's theory of absolute space and time; he is remembered in logic chiefly for his geometrical illustrations. Written originally in 1768-72 at the request of the Princess of Anhalt-Dassau, niece of Frederick the Great, the Letters to a German Princess was very popular and circulated in seven languages. Condorcet's Éloge d'Euler occupies pages 1-28 in volume I.
