Product Description
EISLER, Rudolf. Wörterbuch der Philosophischen Begriffe. Historisch-Quellenmässig bearbeitet .... Vierte neubearbeitete Auflage [Weitergeführt und vollendet durch Dr. Karl Roretz]. Berlin: E.S. Mittler & Sohn. 1927-30.
Three volumes, large 8vo: vii[i], 893[3]; [viii], 780[4]; [vi], 9062] pp. Contemporary half morocco gilt, worn at extremities, and the leather on the spines somewhat dry and brittle. From the library of Jonas Cohn.
First published in one volume in 1899; volumes 2 & 3 of the fourth edition were edited with the assistance of Karl Roretz following Eisler's death. This is perhaps the best technical dictionary of philosophy produced up to its time. Even now [1967], it is probably one of the ten best available dictionaries of philosophy, ranking along with the better works of the twentieth century. Its articles contain terse definitions and are rich not only in relevant quotations in the original languages, including English, but also in bibliographical citations. On Oriental subjects the articles were weak in the first edition ... but were strengthened somewhat in subsequent editions. The later editions, although expanded in coverage, contain fewer quotations in languages other than German. (The Encyclopedia of Philosophy, vol. 6, p.182/3).
