With newspaper cutting Census of Victoria, 1861 - Occupation of the People pasted to verso of title-page. Charles Gavan Duffy (1816-1903), an Irish nationalist, went to Australia in November 1855. He set up as a barrister and was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly, beginning his career by sponsoring a bill to abolish the property qualification for Members of Parliament. In the O'Shanassy government, he was the Minister responsible for Lands and his Land Act was passed in 1862.
