Thomas Sherlock (1678-1761) was the son of William Sherlock, Dean of St. Paul's; Thomas succeeded his father as Master of the Temple in 1704, and he became Bishop of London in 1748, although he fell out of favour at Court during the time of the Bangorian controversy. In 'Several Discourses ....' [first published in 1754], he set out to define the roles of reason and revelation in religious life, the overriding concern of which is the quest for salvation and the realization of the promise of eternal life. ... Sherlock's moral philosophy, though rationalist, was distinctly and unashamedly hierarchical in character ... (D.O. Thomas in Dictionary of Eighteenth-Century British Philosophers).
